Ikigai

September 2, 2018

Ikigai is a Japanese concept that means "a reason for being." The word "ikigai" is usually used to indicate the source of value in one's life or the things that make one's life worthwhile.

A quick search in Wikipedia states the word translated to English roughly means "thing that you live for" or "the reason for which you wake up in the morning." Each individual's ikigai is personal to them and specific to their lives, values and beliefs. It reflects the inner self of an individual and expresses that faithfully, while simultaneously creating a mental state in which the individual feels at ease. Activities that allow one to feel ikigai are never forced on an individual; they are often spontaneous, and always undertaken willingly, giving the individual satisfaction and a sense of meaning to life.

From the image, you can see Ikigai is the focal point and combination of the following:

  • What I Love

  • What I am good at

  • What the world needs

  • What I can be paid for

When you figured out what you love and what you’re good at, it’ll be the thing that fascinates and excites you. It’s the thing that you’ll do even if you’re not paid for it. Then you know you’ve hit the nail on the head. Next, is to combine that information with what the world needs and find the target market.

Find your Ikigai, improve your fulfilment factor, improve your quality of life.
